[reviews]2011 Kia Optima SX: Road Test

The 2011 Kia Optima SX delivers performance of a V6 powered car, but delivers fuel economy of a four-cylinder car, has belligerent good looks and comes with plenty of features and has extended warranty.

2011 BMW X6 ActiveHybrid BMW-but Unimpressive

Well, not many of times it happens, but in case of 2011 BMW ActiveHybrid X6 it has happened. Now you will be confused and asking what has happened and what doesn’t happens too often? Aren’t you? But its not only you who is confused here, we also are confused on where to start the introduction for the 2011 BMW ActiveHybrid X6. The reason behind this being the confusing character of the SUV, you see we have said it a SUV, but if you look at it its more of a crossover utility vehicle carried out with coupe-style character and having fuel efficiency of a hybrid. But while trying to be all that, the X6 ends up as a vehicle that will keep you guessing its original genre. Despite all this let’s start with the introduction.

The 2011 BMW ActiveHybrid X6 basically is a carlike crossover and is based on the platform of the full-size X5 SUV. Just to give it a personal touch, X6 has been designed for four passengers only and the drastically sloping roof line of the vehicle limits the headroom in the rear seats of the vehicle, outward visibility and cargo space. So you can say that X6 basically is a SUV equivalent for a schematic coupe.

But BMW has added their first-ever hybrid system to the X5 SUV platform to develop 2011 BMW ActiveHybrid X6. The hybrid system of the car has been developed in association with GM and the firm previously known as DaimlerChrysler. The hybrid system used in X6 can propel the SUV at low speed by means of the power transmitted by its batteries to a couple of electric motors covered inside the transmission. Along with the V8 turbocharged engine from the X6 xDrive50i, the ActiveHybrid system of the vehicle generates maximum power of 480 horses and 575 lbs-ft of maximum torque.

2011 Honda Insight - Fuel Efficient And Reliable, But somewhat problematic

The Honda Insight entered the market as a rival to Toyota Prius. Yes, you guessed it right the Insight is also a hybrid, and has the design just as American thought hybrid should have and delivered fuel economy better than any other vehicle on road. But in addition to this all, Honda also promised driving experience, which was nothing different and a cheaper price. The overall package looked impressive. But considering the dreary interest of customers in market has made us thing that the Honda Insight is more of a copycat and not a contender.

The increased power and torque could be attributed to the blend of revised turbo boost and the smooth exhaust and intake systems. The brakes for the car which already were immensely impressive have also been enlarged a tad bit by means of added performance potential.

Despite this, Nissan says that packaging improvements for the engine and transaxle mean there is more trunk space. The new car also should be marginally lighter than before.

2011 Volvo C70

The Volvo C70 arrived in 2006 during the middle of a recent boom in the folding-hardtop convertible market, and has so far met with limited success. But a number of recent changes make the 2011 Volvo C70 genuinely worth a second-look. Why? Mainly because of a major overhaul of its exterior that brings it more in line with Volvo's latest thinking in design, represented by the new XC60 and S60. Up front, that means a new grille (with an enlarged Volvo badge -- a visual punctuation being applied across the line), elaborately-flared headlights, and even spanking-new front fenders. The back is stamped with freshly-minted LED taillights set into a new rear fascia, while inside, there's a sleeker new dash, better textures, and C70-unique gauges.
The C70 is new in other ways too, including making Volvo's 5-speed automatic transmission standard equipment, along with premium leather, and Sirius satellite radio. What stays the same is the excellent T5 engine, Volvo's turbocharged 5-cylinder engine which produces 227 horsepower and 236 lb-ft or torque. Oh, and that nifty top, too.

Jaguar XJ (2011)[Reviews]

This car isn't kidding. The dramatic new shape speaks of a shift in direction for the XJ nameplate; the driving experience follows up on the promise. It's true that the previous XJ had an aluminum body and roughly the same chassis architecture, so you could argue this is little more than a reskin and a repowering. But in the first few yards, you realize it represents a comprehensive rethink of what a large Jaguar luxury sedan should be.

It's shifting away from the S-Class or A8 or 7 Series. The XJ feels distinctly sportier. The ride is no longer the waft it was with the old XJ. The V-8 isn't intended to be silent. The steering is quick, the cornering agile. The design isn't meant to communicate formality or businesslike status: It's about panache and extroversion and a bit of fun. Just look at that interior. The most stylish cabin in the world today? I wouldn't disagree. And as to the exterior: Well, as we drive through Paris, a city where people know about style, they stop and point and stare in amazement. Driving through the countryside north of that great city, where the traffic-free rural roads roads are alternately open and sweeping or twisty and bumpy, your reporter is continually amazed too-at the numbers being passed by the speedometer needle.

That is the achievement of the new XJ. Other big sedans use a wider array of active chassis technologies than the Jaguar does; it does without 4WD or 4WS or active steering or active anti-roll. But when the others hunker into their sport modes, they tend to lose fluency. They take every opportunity to remind you what a task it is to make an elephant dance. The XJ is different. It feels remarkably unflustered and natural.
It turns into curves with something approaching glee and stays remarkably flat both in roll and pitch.
The steering is so progressive your confidence rapidly builds. Mid-corner bumps do nothing to upset the action. The deeply contoured seat communicates the car's surprisingly neutral balance. The adaptive dampers are so good they disguise their presence. Most traces of untoward waveforms, whether high-frequency wheelhop or low-frequency body float, are diminished to the point you just don't think about them. Jaguar engineers opted for coil springs at the front (the predecessor was air) for a more natural feel. For the same reason, they bolted the subframe to the body without bushings, though noise refinement is still first rate. At the back, air springs are retained to level the car when laden.

Have we gotten used to an exterior design that aroused initial controversy? Yes, in traffic it looks striking from all angles, novel from some, and beautiful from most -- and athletic, despite its size. Indeed, the increased front track over the outgoing car happened mainly because the designers wanted it. The chassis guys were happy, since it bestowed more grip and less roll. The body engineers had the smarts to deliver a bigger car with greater stiffness but no extra weight.

We're driving a long-wheelbase version, on 20-inch wheels. Under the hood is the 5.0-liter, 385-horsepower engine introduced to the XF and XJ last year. It has variable cam phasing and direct injection, and is a delightfully torquey unit, marked by a soft woofle under light throttle. Light throttle is all you need most of the time, thanks to the combination of that torque, good transmission programming and light vehicle weight. Take it into the upper registers and it still sounds unstressed, but performance is mighty effective. There's a supercharged version above that, available with 470 horsepower-or 510 if you're in a big hurry. A 0-to-60-in-4.7 kind of hurry.

That transmission is operated by the JaguarDrive selector, a drum that powers upward from a flush position on the console. The shifts on the ZF six-speed transmission arrive smoothly just when you need them, making Mercedes' seven-speeder feel fussy. In sport auto mode, it's superb at predicting when you'd want a downshift on entry to a curve. Use the paddles to manually shift under power, and there can be a bit of a thump in the back, but the compensation is a very prompt reward to your demand.

The headline driver-facing technology is a large virtual instrument cluster; except for the clock, there are no actual dials. The thin-film-technology screen imparts information when needed. For example, the area occupied by fuel and temp gauges gives way to a satnav junction diagram as you approach a turn, and a large gear indicator appears in place of the hi-fi selection when you're in manual mode, and the rev-counter will switch to a large active cruise display or car setup configurator as needed.

But otherwise, Jaguar hasn't gone mad with high tech. Perhaps that's a reflection of the firm's relatively small size, but it also matches the XJ's character. There's no night vision, no lane-keeping assist, no follow-to-stop cruise control or autonomous braking.
No, the XJ isn't about fading into the background, transporting corporate bigwigs with their minds elsewhere. It's about the joy of the road. For that reason, Jaguar no longer provides the softest ride in the class. The XJ is never harsh, and when a bump is past it's immediately damped into history. But when you're in the car, you do know there's an actual road beneath. The idea is, you go out there and exploit it.

Seven years after the model was first introduced, Porsche has redesigned and arguably reinvented its popular Cayenne SUV with its latest generation. This new model is considerably lighter than the outgoing model, yet is actually more spacious, more sporty, more powerful and even more fuel efficient.

2011 Acura ZDX

This is what Acura wants you to drive once your kids leave home; a high-style, luxury-laden, all-wheel drive, coupe-like crossover, with just enough room for your significant other and a couple of overnight bags. Acura calls it the ZDX and it's the answer to question nobody but BMW asked – what shall we build for people who don't want to drive a small wagon?
Think of the ZDX as a chop-top, back-swept MDX, as the two share the same 300 horsepower, 3.7-liter V-6, 6-speed automatic transmission and Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) system. The key difference is that while MDX is a three row, seven passenger people hauler, the ZDX is chiefly designed as coupe, meaning room for two and gear.
Sure, it has four doors and five seatbelts, but the second row is suitable only for medium sized children or adults on short trips. Cargo capacity is comically small, but Acura imagines those rear seats folded down to accommodate golf bags, suitcases or a tidy haul from the antique shop.

First Drive: 2011 Maserati GranTurismo MC

The Maserati GranTurismo is big, wide, and heavy. Even in its new, racy MC guise, it is more of a GT than a hard-core sports car. But under the direction of former Formula 1 racing driver Ivan Capelli, the Maserati Corse division has created an intriguing evolution of the GranTurismo that is surprisingly easy to live with.

To qualify for the MC badge, the GranTurismo had to shed weight and gain power. An 11-hp increase sounds like cheap chip tuning, but since this is a normally aspirated V-8, the engineers had to reduce friction, weight, and thermodynamic losses. While the maximum power output climbs to 444 hp at 7000 rpm, the torque peak rises by 7 lb-ft to 376 lb-ft at 4750 rpm. Weight has dropped by about 100 pounds due to the removal of sound-deadening materials and other luxuries. Thanks to excellent dynamic weight distribution, the MC needs neither a launch-control program nor traction control to translate all the torque into traction.

Rolling through Barcelona, Spain, the blue coupe catered primarily to eyes and ears. Eyes because the modified shape turns even more heads than usual thanks to fender flares, sill extensions, a deck-lid spoiler, a blacked-out rear apron, and a front air deflector. Ears because the two large-diameter tailpipes play a spine-tingling tune above 4000 rpm in Sport mode and throughout the entire rev range in Race. On the autovia heading toward Montserrat, only the radar traps prevented us from testing the GranTurismo's aerodynamic stability, which reportedly has improved dramatically.

2011 Honda CR-Z By Mugen

The hybrid craze has gone to new levels and everyone wants in on the action. Unlucky for those that are late in joining the game, Mugen has come around with yet another version of the Honda CRZ, promising to transform the vehicle into one "hot hybrid hatch." Their newest package comes with a killer supercharger that takes the CRZ to a greater level of performance, and possibly a better fuel economy as well.

The Honda CRZ Mugen will still come with its standard 1.5L four cylinder engine, but will get the boost in power from a new supercharger. Standard outputs for the CRZ come in at 113 HP and 107 lb-ft of torque for just the engine, while adding the standard hybrid package will get those outputs up to 122 HP and 128 lb-ft of torque. Mugen has taken their upgrade a step further by developing their own electronic package that, together with the supercharged engine, will deliver a total of 197 HP and 181 lb-ft of torque. Just like there’s no sex in the champagne room, there’s no slacking over at Mugen’s place either.

Acura first launched its luxury crossover in 2001 to take on luxury utility vehicles like the Audi Q7, Lexus RX, Cadillac SRX and Infiniti FX -- yet with a decidedly biased sporty on-road behavior. Now the latest MDX features the Super Handling AWD system and is tuned to tear up the asphalt, not the dirt. Acura developed the MDX with testing on Germany's Nurburgring -- which is why you won't find a low-range transfer case on the options list of the MDX.The latest MDX features a new 3.7-liter.SOHC VTEC V6 with 300 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque, which Acura says now features more heavy-duty parts for extra longevity. Acura has replaced the five-speed automatic transmission with a new six-speed transmission, bringing EPA fuel economy to an estimated 16/21 mpg for city/highway driving.

For the latest model year onward, Jaguar's XJ luxury sedan has an all-new look that ditches the retro styling of the previous model for a much more contemporary look. Priced from $72,500, the car rivals the BMW 7-Series and Mercedes-Benz S-Class lines.

Chevrolet Aveo RS [Reviews]

The American automaker Chevrolet is taking a few cues from their European compacts with the all new Aveo RS that will be unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show. Looking like something about to turn into an autobot, the very special sport compact gives the bowtie’s smallest offering a high performance kick in the pants.

Painted in Boracay Blue, the Aveo RS if full of global GM design cues like a dual element front grill, round tail lamps and flared fenders; but at the same time adding aggression with a low hanging big mouth front bumper an fog lights pushed to either side of the fascia. The rest of the exterior is highlighted by a set of 19 inch five spoke rims finished in gun metal metallic finish. Out back the integrated hatch spoiler continues the roof lines, the rear clusters are filled with LEDs and a a center mounted twin tip exhaust finishes off the sporty compact.

The interior of the Aveo RS offers a whole new look at the way instruments are laid out with the lage round tachometer off to the left with a large multifunction display next to it on the right. The rest of the inside is dressed up with a combination of matte and gloss black trim pieces as well as matching blue stiching on the leather wrapped pieces. Under the hood Chevrolet has placed the same engine found in the current Cruze, a 1.4 Liter four cylinder turbocharged Ecotec motor making 138 HP mated to a slick shifting six speed manual transmission. Chevy claims that this is a nod at future Aveos and with an sportier version of Ford’s Fiesta coming in a year or two, youth inspire fun designs like these might just be what GM needs to get back on top.

Chevrolet today announced the world debut of the Aveo RS show car at the 2010 North American International Auto Show. It features a European-inspired hot hatch look designed to appeal to young enthusiasts, and hints at the next-generation Aveo.
